Question is it harmful to use regular alkaline batteries in my solar lights?
My solar light batteries wore out and I replaced them with regular alkaline batteries and the lights are "lit" at night. Is it okay or should I get solar batteries?

Best Answer Alkalines are generally not rechargable, so after a few nights, they will be dead. Shortly thereafter, they may leak. The best thing to get is batteries specifically designed for your solar lights. Before, this meant NiCd batteries designed to withstand high temperature. Newer solar lights may have a charging circuit that can handle NiMH. But if you see a NiCd battery in there now, that's a clue that the charger is just a simple trickle charger, and will not charge NiMH well.

Question Set up a cheap solar system to run a few 12volt lights off of. Can I use AA solar charging batteries?
I am currently looking at solar lighting but want to stay cheap, very cheap. I found a little 5 watt solar panel and I want to use its' power for a few low wattage 12v DC lights. Can I rig this to a number of cheap solar charging AA batteries rather than buying a much larger solar battery?

Best Answer you would need 8 AA batteries, and hood them all together to run 12v lights, but I am sure that it could be done. or you could pick up a good car battery and do it easier. maybe one from the wreaking yard.
